GRASSY ISLAND TOUR
Some of the best local paddling is right in RKC’s neighborhood.  One of our first official trips, the Grassy Island Tour has become a staple in the RKC paddling itinerary.  We begin at the Pine Street Put-In, in Wyandotte, and paddle north on the Detroit River, getting a river view of Downtown Wyandotte and the North tip of Grosse Ile.  Once we reach Grassy Island, we get a view of wildlife such as flocks of swans along the west side of the island, prehistoric looking cormorants along the banks and on the small outlying islands, deer grazing along the shore, snakes sunning on the rocks, and if we’re lucky, a Bald Eagle nesting high in the trees.  On the return, we paddle with the current and get a gorgeous view of the dusk sky over the water.  Beginners and experienced paddlers welcome.

MUD ISLAND TOUR
An extended version of the Grassy Island tour, the Mud Island Tour will follow the same route as the Grassy tour, however will continue north around Mud Island before returning to the Pine Street Put-In.  Due to its longer time on the water and multiple short open water crossings, this trip is recommended for more experienced paddlers.

  HENNEPIN POINT TOUR
A variation on the Grassy Island Tour, this trip takes us around the northern tip of Grosse Ile (Hennepin Point) and continues south along the banks of the island.  Paddlers can see wildlife as well as some beautiful architecture of homes on the island.  The group will then cut through the Hennepin Point Canal of Grosse Ile and paddle in the quiet water back to the western side of the island and up river to return to Pine Street in Wyandotte. This trip is appropriate for all levels of kayaking experience.

  GROSSE ILE ROUND TRIP TOUR
A trip for the slightly more adventurous! We begin at the Pine Street Put-In, in Wyandotte, and paddle south along the western banks of Grosse Ile.  As we round the southern tip of the island, we cross between Grosse Ile and Celeron Island. Depending on weather, the point can be calm or confused.  The return, up-river, on the east side of the island proves to be a bit more challenging as parts of the trip may cross into the Detroit River shipping channel.  A break for lunch near the south end of Grosse Ile gives the group a well-earned rest.  As we continue north, we often experience more lively seas, occasional opportunities to surf, and up-close encounters with huge freighters.  Closer to shore, views of unique architecture and beautiful homes provide the scenery.  The historic Grosse Ile Lighthouse is a popular landmark along this route.  Finally the group rounds Hennepin Point for the last leg of the tour and heads south once again to return to Pine Street.  Previous kayaking experience is recommended.  Bring a lunch and plenty of water.  Please note, there are limited restroom facilities along this route.
